Families who are hoping to someday bring the issue of medical cannabis to a vote in Nebraska are hosting a fundraiser this weekend.
Nebraska Families 4 Medical Cannabis will sponsor a family picnic at the Boat House Bar & Grill at Branched Oak Lake in Raymond from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday.
Fellowship and family games of Washers - which is somewhat similar to horseshoes - Jenga, fishing games and others will be played. There will be a cash bar.
The moms, dads and other family members of people with illnesses ranging from epilepsy to cancer and soldiers with post traumatic stress disorder or chronic pain are working to begin circulating a ballot petition to legalize cannabis for medical purposes.
An effort to pass a law to allow for medical cannabis in Nebraska failed in the Legislature during the 2016 session.
Before a petition drive can be launched, the families must raise $40,000 for initial campaign and petition expenses, the group said.
Volunteers for the petition effort can also sign up at the event.
Admission is free; suggested contributions are $25 for individuals and $50 for families. Donations will be accepted online at NF4MC.org or donors can mail checks or money orders to NF4MC, P.O. Box 253, Boys Town, NE, 68010.
