HempX Asheville is a free, family-friendly festival that organizers says is intended to spread awareness and educate the public about what's happening in our state and surrounding states with the legalization of industrial hemp.
It includes a hemp fashion show, panel discussions, local music, "hemp-centric" vendors and industry representatives.
It's back as North Carolina is in the inaugural year of its industrial hemp pilot program. HempX Asheille happens at Franny's Farm, the first farm growing hemp from seed.
The Leicester farm hosts several vendors selling items ranging from lip balm, essential oils, body lotions and clothing. There were also demonstrations on how oil is made from hemp seeds.
Franny Tacy was overjoyed with having so many people come together and network.
"They're the researchers, they're the farmers, they're the people interested in the industry, they're the entrepreneurs," said Tacy. "This is a huge, tight-knit group that is very interested in moving this industry forward. From everything from the textiles to the food side."
Organizations and vendors present included N.C. State University, Fiber Farm, Fifth Season Gardening, Alembic Studios, Carolina Hemp Company, Hemptations, Blue Ridge Hemp and Hybrid Health.
Asheville Tea Co. was also giving out samples of tea it has been blending with hemp from Franny's Farm.
"It's totally unchartered territory. It's a total experiment getting the flavors right, and it's interesting because you want to be able to taste something different, but blending it with things that make it really palatable also," Asheville Tea Co. owner Jessie Dean said. "It's definitely interesting seeing what works and doesn't work."
The event also features workshops on hemp paper making, hemp "breaking" and weaving.
