NC: A Pot Shop In Pembroke? Town Officials Cool On Idea

Pembroke — Selectmen have expressed concern about a medical marijuana dispensary's interest in opening a shop in town.

Robert Schnibbe, chief operating officer of Green Harbor Dispensary, told the board Monday that his company wants to open three dispensaries on the South Shore and would like to get a letter of non-opposition — and eventually a letter of approval — from selectmen to have one of them in Pembroke.

The dispensary would benefit patients in need of medical marijuana, and it would be willing to share a portion of its revenue with the town, Schnibbe said.

"We would probably start at a fixed amount payable quarterly," he said.

Schnibbe said the amount paid to the town would increase yearly, and the town might eventually get a percentage of the business's revenue.

Selectman Daniel Trabucco said the town has already prepared for the possibility of a medical marijuana dispensary with the creation of an overlay district, or an area where the businesses would be allowed.
"There will be no mystery in where these places will be opening up," Trabucco said.

Selectman William Boulter voiced opposition to the dispensary idea. He said children might be able to obtain prescriptions for medical marijuana and that the drug could get into the wrong hands.
"I can see nothing but trouble from it," he said.

Selectmen Chairman Lewis Stone said what Green Harbor Dispensary is proposing isn't right for Pembroke.
"I think that at this time there's too much abuse in the current system," he said.

Schnibbe assured selectmen that Green Harbor Dispensary assembled what he considers to be the best security team in the country.

"We're all parents and grandparents. We don't want this stuff falling into the wrong hands," he said.
Selectmen will take up the issue again at their July 11 meeting.
