The legislature's committee on marijuana legalization and regulation will hold public consultations across the province in July, the government announced Monday.
The committee made up of members of the government and opposition will use the report produced by the working group, which was released last week, as a guide for discussions with the public.
Here's a list of the dates and locations of the hearings:
-Grand Falls: Wednesday, July 12, 9 am, E&P Sénéchal Centre, 60 Ouellette St.
-Atholville: Thursday, July 13, 9 am, Alma Hall, 256 Notre-Dame St.
-St. Stephen: Monday, July 24, 9 am, Garcelon Civic Centre, 22 Budd Ave.
-Saint John: Tuesday, July 25, 9 am, Port Saint John, 111 Water St.
-Moncton: Wednesday, July 26, 9 am, Delta Beauséjour, 750 Main St.
-Miramichi: Thursday, July 27, 9 am. Rodd Miramichi River Hotel, 1809 Water St.
-Fredericton: Friday, July 28, 9 am, Legislative Assembly, 706 Queen St.
The working group made certain recommendations based on their research and analysis. The suggestions included setting a minimum age of 19 for consumption, and selling marijuana through stores operated by a crown corporation rather than private-sector companies.
The working group said that a public model best served the safety and health interests of New Brunswickers.
"It is envisioned that retail operations will be limited to cannabis and associated products in separate locations from liquor and will be strategically placed away from areas frequented by youth (schools, parks, playgrounds, sports fields/arenas)," says the report. "Further restrictions could be applied, limiting the number or stores, limiting the hours of operations and not permitting youth in retail areas."
The working group is comprised of senior officials from the departments of Justice and Public Safety, Health and Finance, as well as the New Brunswick Liquor Corporation and Opportunities NB.
The government isn't bound by the recommendations. It will use merely them as a discussion guide with the public, and will develop the final framework for recreational cannabis this fall.
