My new closet - comments?

I built a closet in my home office this last week.. here's some before and after shots of the house. I've got a 400w hps/mh to hang in there, the ballast/fan/scrubber will be in an isolated area at the top of the closet. The only thing I haven't figured out yet is how to handle passive air intake space- I could easily have cut vents in the floor or outside walls- but then I'd have wildly varying intake temps throughout the year, so the intakes are going to have to come from inside the room. I'm thinking that I'll probably put some vent covers on the wall on both sides of the new door near the floor. You can see the size vent I'm planning on using in the last picture (I hope that two of those will provide enough intake space).

I'm either going to exhaust out a vent cap in the roof or directly into the eave of the house which will blow the exhaust into the walls and roof. Since I have a cool tube, I don't think temps are going to be a problem, I just have to change the air enough to keep co2 levels good. I have a 4" x 18" carbon scrubber and a 500cfm duct fan to work with.

I'll post some pics of the inside of the closet once the light/mylar/fan/etc are in later this week.

This closet will be home to a white widow scrog. Still have to design or find a small mother/clone cabinet somewhere.. not sure how I'm going to handle that yet.

Very impressive. You have some good carpentry skills. Cant wait to see more pics of the inside of that closet and how your set up looks fully set up!

I don't think thermal imaging is a problem out here in the woods where I live. I really don't think a single 400w light would raise any eyebrows anyway.

Nice Egress application. Venting top side? Yes, Intake from inside of your Office, with a vent cover on the wall. The temp will be more stable.
400w HPS/ MH no problem. You are on track.
Soil Grow? Keep the pics coming

Thanks to all of you for the support. I was planning on venting out the roof, but after seeing this monster activeAir carbon filter that I ordered I think I'm going to vent right back into the room, above the door. No need to put a conspicuous vent cap on a closet roof.

I've got everything I need to get the inside up and running now, I'll get it finished and post some pics this weekend. I've got a couple seedlings itching to move into their new bedroom.

Cherma: Yes it'll be a soil grow.. I've never grown hydro before and I'm a little intimidated by the unknown. Besides that, I LOVE my plants and it feels a little matrix-like growing them in water. I do plan on a scrog, and I've never done that before either.. one unknown at a time.

Nice work!. the 400 vented back into your room will warm your room up a bit. Not as much as higher wattage bulbs but still noticeable. If you do get worried about thermal imaging then look into "Block IR" to line your closet with. Works well as a reflective surface too. What are the inside dimensions of the closet?

When I get my house you are welcome to come over and help build my secret grow room for sure. Looking forward to see the room come alive.

Sorry the updates are so late.. I've been busy with work. Here's a few pics of the finished closet.

Only problem left to resolve is that little black fan you see mounted on the wall to keep the plants moving a little.. it's blowing in a downward direction, which is counter to the air flow in the closet.. and the temps are getting into the 90's. It's the smallest fan I could find (you wouldnt believe how hard it is to find fans in winter), and on the lowest speed its far too much wind to blow directly on the girls. The obvious answer is moving lower so that it blows upward.. but right now there's a table in there to keep the girls close enough to the light and the fan wont fit lower. I suppose I could get some chain and lower the light but that's more nuisance than I want to deal with today.. I'll have to give it some thought.

nice bro. I use the same fans for intakes to my grow hut. You may need a higher CFM vortex style fan to draw the heat out. Esecially when pulling through a carbon filter. What temp is the outside room? You may want to get a 6 inch muffin fan or similar for the passive vent on the door. It may help force the cooler outside room air in.

Air intake is a vent in the bottom of the door, on the outside it's at the bottom, and on the inside it's about 24 inches higher, so the hole is staggered to keep light from coming out. The temps were holding 78-82 before I put in that little black fan for air movement. The office stays about 78 degrees year round (which is too damned hot in the winter but this room has too many heater ducts in it.. something else on my to-do list).

I ended up using a 250 cfm 6" duct fan instead of the 500cfm 8" duct fan that I originally planned on.. I figured that once it was reduced to 6" it would lower to at least 250cfm anyway. The space is 62 cubic feet.. so even if I'm dropping to 180cfm with the duct bends and carbon filter it's 3 changes per minute. Truth is as long as the temps are manageable (and they are dead on without that pesky black fan) 1 change per minute would be satisfactory.

So I took the air circulation fan out until i could figure out what to do with it.. and the temps didnt drop at all. The only other thing i changed was adding mylar to the walls.. will mylar raise the temps in the room? Is it possible the mylar could raise the temps 15 degrees?!

The mylar should not raise your temps 15 degrees, maybe 2 at most. It just redirects the light not the heat, as long as you have steady air flow you'll be just fine.

Dont know about the mylar affecting the head THAT much but looking good man, keep up the good work. cant wait to see the finished product and your grow journal!

No worries 30 years soil growing and I am still getting up the hutzpahs to do a hydro grow. What soil have you chosen? Fertilzers?
