My 1st Hybrid Delimma

BWC BayArea

Member of the Month: 3rd Place Winner
I have 6 seedlings that came from 1 1/2 yr old beans that have been in storage. I had 8-9 of 15 germ, culled 2 or three for damping off and/or slow growth. I potted all 6 in a Sphagnum based medium with added perilite. Unbeknownst to me, this medium has little to no nutes. My oldest seedlings have 3 sets of true leaves and are yellowing from the cotelydons up. I assume this is from lack of nitrogen. One has a purple stem, I assume stems from PH issues. I purchased Alaska Fish fertilizer (5-1-1). The marketers clain it wont burn. I also purchased some Shcultz liquid plant food (10-15-15). Nearest Hydro shop is over 100 miles. this is my attempt to stick to a scedule and motivate myself to make the necessary moves. I plan to shop next week. In the interim the aforementioned is what they will be eating. My only other alternative was to purchase a commercial potting soil, fill a container, flush the medium, collect run off, dillute, and water seedlings. I belive this would have been efective because feeding outdoor plants indoor run off never harmed them that I could see. Anyhow, a journal maybe in the works being that its been a wile for me and I work better with your eyes on me. I would like your feedback here. Anything I forget to consider? I'm welcome to all suggestions. :peace:

Hey, BWC! How did the shopping go? I'm looking forward to following your new journal. I thought that was a great idea you had about flushing commercial potting soil and using the runoff to feed. In a pinch, that would work great. Do you have a Lowes close by? I have one around the corner, and I browse the garden center from time to time. I've noticed Kellogs has what seems to be a nice soil. It has chicken manure, kelp meal, worm castings, and bat guano. Also on the bag it says it has Dolomite Lime as well. I'm going to try it out at my Moms property for her veggie garden next spring. I've considered giving it a run for a cannabis grow.

Anyway, just some food for thought. Any input on that soil would be great.

Shopping

I used the nutes I purchased from the hardware store 1st feed. I kept PPMs down around 500 because seedlings are in small containers. The yellowing stopped and new growth progressed. I made the 100+ mile drive (1 way) to the grow shop and purchased the following: Fox Farms Grow Big & Tiger Bloom (1qt each), PH reference solution 7.0, PH pen storage solution, 1 qt Dyna Grow Neem oil, 1000W Lumatek Dimable eBallast , and A-wing reflector w/cord set, humidity dome, grodan starter cubes, PH up & down, & 5 mil panda plastic all for around $300 total not including gas. Next I will clean and set up my veg room. Ventilation is my main concern but I really only need ducting and a fan for air circulation.
Currently I have 6 what I hope to be majority girls under (2) T-5 flouros within inches of the lamps.

As far as commercial media goes, I don't know much about them. I don't trust ANY Miracle Grow products. I don't know much about Scotts or Kellogs. I suggest going to a local nursery. I continue to have success with different nurseries. The runoff idea was a desparate shot in the dark. When one is unable to get the assistance and/or supplies needed in a timely fashion, one must learn to be resourceful. Hope i answered your questions. Thanks for responding Yard Dog. :peace:

:bravo: you did do some shopping! Very good price in my opinion. Looks like other than the ventilation you're ready to rock n roll.

I agree about the Miracle Grow products. I stick with the Roots Organic and Fox Farm soils. I am interested in the Kellogs for gardening though. It is OMRI certified as well.

Anyway...good luck to you on this new grow! I'll be watching :peace:

Just transplanted 4 of plants from 16 oz cups to 32 oz containers in a sphagnum based medium. Fed FFGB PH 6.2, 600 ppm. I didn't have B-1 on hand so i'll be watching for shock symptoms. They are beneath a 600 W HPS lamp in an A wing reflector

PH issues and deficiency issues. My runoff PH on average was 5.3 therefore making some nutes that are present, unavailable. I upped the PH of nutes/and water to the 6.4-6.5 range and have been noticing a gradual increase in runoff PH. I flushed them all between 6.3-6.9 depending upon individual needs. Next problem I noticed was N deficiency due missing FF Big Bloom. I'd only been feeding them Grow Big & occasionally some Alaska fish fertilizer. I recently checked a catalogue that just happened to have FoxFarm's feeding schedule in the back and noticed I was missing it. I only have Tiger Bloom & Grow Big. Purple petioles and stem striping due to low PH.

Transplanted 4 of what I think will be girls to some 12" Wal-Mart pots in Ferti-Lome potting soil (dunno how this is classified as soil w/virtually no nutes ok it). Been feeding a mix of FF Grow Big & FF Tiger Bloom to keep yellowing of leaves from progressing. but it appears to be working its way up a couple plants. This was taken a few days after transplanting. I have nothing for transplant shock so they're on thei own

I'd really like to get them stable any help is appreciated. If a moderator could move this to active journals I'd appreciate that as well. :peace:

Very healthy looking plants BWC! Some good bud swell going on there. Look at those lovely hairs!

I know you said you're using just those 3 FF nutes. No additives, or Mag supplementation needed?
Keep those pics coming :bravo:

I use cal mag when I use RO water. just those 3 nutes, yup. Started with molasses a couple days ago. Thanks for the compliment. Hope they keep swelling.

Thanks to fellow members, i've incorporated molasses into my feeding and watering. I don't think i've seen buds swell this fast before. I wish I could post pics to show. My best girl has fat colas. One branch may have to be tied up, its leaning. Got one i sprayed for mites that's got decent bud growth but the spray set them back I believe. They are not swelling like her sister. 2 others were put in with some nute lockout issues, with budsites everywhere but slimmer buds. Got ok seed development on the sprayed plant, but the swollen prego girl has some seeds that are spliting open the bract containing them. the entire plant isnt seeded only a few buds I selected and manually pollenated. Some how over the years i've learned to push plants thru flower despite mites, gnats, thrips, PM, high temps, over fertilization, etc. This is a grow for personal smoke. I won't deny a patient if really in need but I'm trying to learn my strain so i can further develop it. I've been talking about breeding my own strain for years and I can't believe I'm doing it. Im outdoors this year too. I'm so thamkful necause all i'be been thru, setbacks and disappointments I'm still going, reaching goals and improving. U guys, this is a hell of a feeling. I cant share it with people in real life so i thought I'd share it with people who can relate. I really love growing. When the site finishes working out the bugs I have a few cool pics.

Lots of good stuff in this post! What molasses additive are you using? Can't wait to see pics!

So cool you're doing your own breeding, and have seeds. This is real life my friend, it's just that we all never see each other face to face. Glad you're feeling that feeling about your grow, so much fun!
