MrHIGHed's Tahoe OG Hydro ScroG 2012

Hello 420Mag and my fellow marijuana enthusiasts,

As the title suggests, I am currently growing Cali Connection's Tahoe OG. This will be my fourth grow in this space, third using the scrog technique.

It's been about three weeks since the bigger seedlings poked through the dirt, half that for the 2 smaller ones. I'm hoping to get at least 4 females out of these 7 and veg 'em for 6 weeks (or until the screen is about full) in 5 gal. perlite hempy buckets before flipping the switch. They're currently on a 16/8 light cycle in hopes of increasing the likelihood for females. The highs and lows for the temps and RH are 73-77 and 40-60, respectively.

I'm currently using:
125w CFL, ~ 3 inches away from seedlings
OC+, about 1 tsp mixed into top layer of soil a few days ago
Fox Farm Ocean Forest Soil
Super Thrive, 1 drop added into last couple waterings
Hygrozyme, 1mL/L added into this morning's watering
blue party cups

Here are some pics (Day 12)

Anybody have any ideas what's wrong with the plant in that close up picture?

How's it hangin', 420 goers and growers!

Here's Update #1, coming to you live from the Rose Room:

Earlier this week, I switched out the 125w CFL with my 180w LED to cater to the seedlings' bounds in growth.

Last night I topped the 4 bigger seedlings, following Uncle Ben's Topping Guide for 4 main colas. However, I plan on cutting off the branches from the first true node as well once the seedlings bounce back from the topping. Basically, I followed the 4 cola procedure to get 2 colas because I would rather use the stronger, second node branches in place of the weaker, first node branches.

Also, since none of the plants have chosen to give up their sexual identification just yet, I decided it would be wise to clone the cuttlings I took from topping just in case I don't have at least 4 females. So, after cutting the tops at 45 degree angles, I rolled the ends in cloning gel, and threw them in my simple, homemade cloner.

I plan on giving them all a seabird guano tea with some worm castings and soil blast either tomorrow or Monday, and I'm expecting to need to top the smaller 3 seedlings and maybe transplant the bigger seedlings around next weekend or so.

Additions to what I'm currently using:
180w LED, ~ 15 inches away from seedlings
Cloning gel
Cloner: 5gal bucket w/ cover, water pump, PVC pipe, 4 sprayer nozzles
Perlite, enough to cover the top of the soil in the seedling cups
Baking pans (or other reflective things), to give the plants a little extra light

Here are some pics, the 'before' pics are from the 17th, the 'after' pics are from just now:

We haven't been updating due to the lack of love lately on 420:smokin:, ( besides you hydrogrown, thank you! How's it going man?) but nonetheless an update is on its way soon. All plants were topped and lollipoped. No sex yet. One clone was planted in a cup after about 2 weeks in the cloner and the rest are fish-bonin' as I type. Two of the oldest (rootbound) plants had to be transplanted to 5 gallon perilite hempies which was highly undesirable considering they could be male
Hopefully pictures will be in the next few days, and we can pick up a few more subscribers to discuss some good old fashion growing. Pictures to come are of the 3 clones almost ready to plant, the now seven vegging tahoe O.G.'s (2 in buckets, 5 in cups) + 1 clone, and the second 180w led along with the scrog! I'll share my simple guano/compost tea recipe as well.

Oh yeah, I made 2 stick of butter from a 1/2 ounce of some decent bud and some oil from leftover vaped weed and let me tell you I am flying from the butter! Not sure what went wrong with the oil, but it was my first attempt and it only gets better from there...

Good night :420: :Namaste:

Hey MrHIGHed! Looking good! Im subbed. I would recommend going ahead and transplanting the rest or switching to 12/12 now. Your babies are getting pretty big for those cups and it will effect your final product. And you most likely wont see any signs of sex on your current 16/8 schedule. Are your oldest about 5 weeks old?

420 love! What's up, guys!

Thanks, BushyBro. To answer your question, the LEDs are 180w, and there's two of 'em in there.

Thanks for the recommendations, rdooski3. I'm not ready to flower these babies just yet though, so I'll wait till they preflower out of sexual maturation--they still have another inch or two to grow before they're ready to start being weaved through the screen (I'll just have to cut the males out of the screen and re-transplant when they sex). And the oldest are about 6 to 7 weeks now, but only a couple of them are into veg and only by a week or two.

Thanks for the advice, Alaskan1. And congrats on your Member of the Month title; you've come a long way since your days of not posting in other people's threads haha. The perlite hempy buckets are the only hydro I'll be running, and if I get enough females, I'll probably end up growing a soil plant or two in air pots. I've used smart pots before (the outside of one of the smart pots I used for a Jedi Kush plant began to mildew over time, so watch out for that! Fabric containers are a pretty questionable choice, I guess, despite the name. Although the mildew didn't seem to negatively impact the plant), but not air pots. Any experience with these? They look super dope :ganjamon:

Good lookin', Jdack!

So, we transplanted the other two of the four bigger seedlings today and planted another clone yesterday.

Ah, yes. I'm familiar with both.

This grow's kind of utilizing both techniques, actually. You pointed out the clones in the bucket, but instead of connecting an air stone to an air pump like you would for a bubbler, you connect PVC equipped with misting sprayer nozzles to a water pump so that the ends of the clones are constantly being sprayed and grow roots, making it an aeroponic cloner. And the hempy buckets end up being kind of similar to flood and drain.

Perlite's a soil-less medium, volcanic glass, technically, you might've seen bits of it in soil blends, and it's pretty ideal for this hydro setup. If you're interested, get the course kind. Drill holes in your buckets (I use 5-gal) two inches from the bottom (your drain hole, the two inches below being your reservoir). Pour the perlite into the buckets outdoors, you don't want perlite dust all over your house or in your breathing holes. Don't overfill--the perlite will rise when rinsed. Rinse (flood) and drain the perlite with a hose outside or in your tub a few times. You will lose good perlite, but you'll lose a lot of bad perlite, which is more important. After, I dump a rinsed bucket or two into a bigger container, mix in an appropriate amount of OC+, and rebucket the rinsed, mixed perlite. Then transplant.

Hello, males and females

I trust everyone had a happy holiday. The OG sure did!

Sorry for the time lapse between updates. We'd written up a lengthy update a couple weeks ago, but the post didn't go through, for whatever technical difficulty related reason...

As you can tell by the pictures, the screen is up, the plants have grown through it, the growth below it is cut, and the ScroG is in motion! To make the screen, we created a topless table (of sorts) out of PVC pipe and zip-tied plastic screen to the frame.

One of the more important steps, and often the step done incorrectly, is the weaving of the plants. I've attached a few close-ups, so you can see what I mean. It's pretty simple--just over and under, growth, over and under, growth, over and under, etc. until the screen is full. I've seen several journals on here, even journals by some of the greats, where they allow as many branches to grow as possible and simply guide those branches through different screen holes and don't weave--that is NOT a ScroG, the screen is serving you no purpose if you don't weave!

A couple of the cupped clones need transplanting, but we've nowhere to put them right now, with 6 plants already transplanted and 5 unsexed (1 female :rocker:). Besides that, I watered them this morning with a guano tea I had brewing overnight, and all is well.

Ooh, also.. Between now and the last update, Ironite and a little Dynamite Red (to offset OC+'s temp release and the colder temps as of late) were added to the buckets a few inches down into the perlite and above the drain hole (where we water). The nozzles hanging down in that first picture are attached to a little makeshift CO2 generator (plastic bottle with water, sugar, and yeast).
