A small bottle of CBD oil provides big relief for 8-year-old Mary Louise Swing.

Her mother Jill says the oil reduces her daughter's epileptic seizures and other symptoms. But she says her daughter will need stronger medicine as she gets older.

"She has started having some larger seizures that are problematic," Jill Swing said. "And we have come to the realization that she's going to need access to whole plant therapy. So not just CBD oil."

Swing supports a comprehensive medical cannabis program. She's traveling to Columbia Thursday to speak at a senate committee hearing.

Lawmakers are considering a medical marijuana bill that would help her daughter and those with other serious health problems.

"We shouldn't have to, you know, move to another state or obtain medicine illegally to help our family members when there's just not another alternative that can help," Swing said.

Swing said she understands why some people might be skeptical about advancing another marijuana related law. Opponents argue marijuana is a gateway drug.

Still, Swing believes the benefits outweigh the risks.

"The lawmakers need to step back. They need to make laws so that physicians can practice medicine and take care of their patients. And that's what this bill does," she said.

The senate medical affairs committee will take up the debate at 9:30 a.m. Thursday.
