The state received more than 1,000 applications from growers, processors and dispensaries that want to open shop in Maryland’s upcoming medical marijuana industry.
The vast majority of the 1,081 applications - 811 - are for dispensaries, according to a final tally of applications released Nov. 24 by the Natalie M. LaPrade Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission. Shortly after the Nov. 6 deadline the commission released preliminary numbers and on Nov. 24 released the final tally of applications received.
The commission is expected to approve up two dispensaries per senatorial district, for a maximum of 94 dispensaries statewide.
With an average of 17 dispensary applications per district, the commission has a big job ahead. The number of dispensary applications is so high in part because many dispensary applicants applied in each senatorial district.
Regulations prevent anyone from obtaining more than one dispensary license.
The commission also received 146 grower applications and 124 processor applications. The commission is expected to grant pre-approval to a maximum of 15 grower applications and can award an unlimited number of processor licenses.
Applicants that receive pre-approval have one year from their notification date complete a litany of next steps (raising money, zoning approvals, property, constructions, hiring) needed to obtain a formal license.
The commission is working with Towson University’s Regional Economic Studies Institute (RESI) to wade through all the applications and develop a methodical approach to reviewing them.
Commission Executive Director Hannah Byron cautioned that because of the overwhelming response, the commission would likely need extra time to process all the applications.
“While we will extend the application review period to accommodate the large number of submissions received, it is premature to offer a revised schedule at this time,” Byron said in a statement.
She said she hoped to make public an adjusted timeline in the near future.
