Pot is on tonight's City Council agenda.
A group called Patients First Inc. is working on setting up one of the four Vermont medical marijuana dispensaries in Montpelier on 188 River St.
"We just need to be briefed," Mayor John Hollar said.
There needs to be adequate security at the facility, Hollar said, and the folks purchasing marijuana need to be legitimate medical marijuana patients.
Police Chief Anthony Facos said in a memo to the City Council that his concerns over the dispensary have been alleviated.
On Friday, Facos said he met with Stacy Grabowski of Patients First Inc. and that he was "satisfied with the security and safety measures that would be implemented if this medical marijuana dispensary were to come to fruition."
Hollar said that because medical marijuana dispensaries are so new in Vermont, it's important that the City Council be involved in the process.
As for legalizing marijuana for recreational use, Hollar said, "I have mixed feelings about it."
On one hand, it's preposterous to put people in jail for marijuana, but, he said, legalizing it could lead to more consumption and a greater public health issue.
According to Substance Abuse and Mental Health data, nearly 100 million Americans over 18 years old have smoked marijuana at least once. In the last year, more than 22 million Americans have smoked pot and more than 8 million will do so today.
So despite marijuana being illegal, people are still smoking a lot of weed.
