Hibbing, MN - It's been just more than a year since Minnesota's have been able to use medical cannabis but thanks to a law that came into effect August 1, even more Minnesotas can use the treatment.
Waiting rooms are a familiar sight for Gail Buchholz.
"There's been times where the medicine's quit working in the pump and I've been completely incapacitated, screaming my head off from the pain and my husband doesn't know what to do with me," she said.
She's suffered from severe back pain for decades but as she waits for her first appointment at LeafLine Labs, she has new hope.
"I know I'm not going to be 100 percent not after thirty years but I hope to be able to turn the pain pump down because I'm getting a lot of side effects from the really hard drugs that I'm on," she said.
Buchholz is one of hundreds of new Minnesotans hoping to try medical cannabis for the first time. Starting August 1, patients suffering from intractable pain join the list of people who can qualify for the treatment. It's something Andrew Bachman, co-founder of LeafLine Labs, said makes perfect sense.
"Medical cannabis has been used to treat pain for millennia and getting back to sort of the origins of medicine and finally having that as an option is something that we're really excited to be a part of," he said.
One month after opening the Hibbing Center can now treat a new group of patients.
"I think it's going to be a big help because it's not going to have the side effects that a lot of these hard drugs have," Buchholz said.
For Buchholz, it's an opportunity to be able to spend more time with her husband.
"And hope to be able to function during life and not have to stay in the house all the time doing nothing and hope to become a little bit more active," she said. "Be able to go fishing with my husband that sort of thing."
It's Another chance for relief for Buccholz and a larger list of clients for LeafLine.
According to LeafLine Labs, more than 400 people enrolled in the state Medical Marijuana registry in preparation for the law expanding the authorized treatments to come into effect.
