Escatawpa - A drug raid has netted more than 700 hydroponic marijuana plants being grown in an Escatawpa house.
Jerry L. McDonald of Jackson County has been charged with manufacture, distribution and possession of a controlled substance, officials said.
He faces up to 30 years in prison if convicted.
According to Bruce Lynd, a state narcotics agent, the marijuana found in the home on Wildwood Road was hydroponic, meaning it was grown in a nutrient-rich solution rather than soil.
The street value of hydroponic marijuana also is higher. A pound goes for more than $2,400 as opposed to $1,600 for the typical product.
All rooms of the three-bedroom house were filled with plants surrounded by reflective walls.
A 55-gallon drum was fitted with hoses to irrigate the plants in each room.
Lynd said overhead lights were timed to help the plants grow faster.
