Miracle Grow vs Fox Farm? Added nutrients or no?

Hey what's up guys.
From my first grow 6 years ago until now, I have always used soil that is recommended for growing weed, and used nutrients, both organic and synth.
I'm growing an outdoor plant this year alongside my wife's parents plant.
They are way more of an old school hippy stoner grower. They have always just used miracle grow soil and maybe a little tomato food during flowering.
When they see me mixing my nutrients they always razz me, asking if I give them that stuff every time, or how they don't believe in adding nutrients(maaybe some tomato food).

It's not the razzing that I'm here to talk about though.
I want to know what other growers think about using products that aren't developed and marketed towards the cannabis community.
Their idea of growing pot is "It's a weed, you just put it in the dirt give it some water and it grows!"(actual words from them, drives me crazy lol).

Thanks

Theirs is the smaller one
It's two different strains and theirs went into shock when they first put it outside.

I'm in the group of use good soil base, and add nuts as needed
I use FFOF and fix farm nutes
The time release nutes in generic soils isn't good since u can't manage them

As an old, old-school grower myself, I can tell you with certainty that your in-laws are absolutely right: you really can grow pot with nothing but dirt, water, and sunlight, man! And here's a shot from 1974 that shows the kind of excellent results we got! Five feet of leafy goodness, ready for harvest!

But seriously, marijuana cultivation techniques have improved SO much over the years, why would anyone want to invest the time and energy into growing without taking advantage of all we've learned and some of the great products that are out there now?

(That said, I really am old school enough to think anyone who's growing pot with a dozen bottles of nutrients has about half a dozen bottles too many. The right amounts of N, P, K, micronutrients, and light will do the job just fine.)
