An 11-year-old boy with epilepsy who became the first patient to be prescribed cannabis oil on the NHS has not had a seizure in 300 days, his family have said.
Billy Caldwell 11, once suffered up to 30 potentially fatal seizures a month due to his epilepsy, which does not respond to medicine or diet treatments, according to the Irish INdependent.
He started receiving cannabis oil treatment in the U.S. and his prescription was transferred to his local GP.
He was prescribed CBD oil by his GP Dr Brendan O’Hare, who described the situation as ‘unique’. ‘Whatever the rights and wrongs, we had a child who had benefitted and the child’s welfare was paramount. On that basis I issued a prescription.’
‘This was not to open the floodgates for others, it is a one-off.
Crucially, CBD products don’t contain any THC, the chemical in cannabis which causes the high – and it is legal in the UK.
Mother Charlotte says, ‘Billy is doing absolutely incredible, he’s improving every week and making progress.
‘I never anticipated a year ago that he would even be still here today so I’m feeling really good and positive.’
Last year, a government regulator said that CBD has a ‘restoring’ effect on humans – and is a legitimate medicine.
The MHRA (Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulation Agency) says that cannabidiol has a ‘restoring, correcting or modifying’ effect on ‘physiological functions’.
‘Cannabidiol’ (CBD), is a chemical from cannabis which campaigners claim helps with diseases including cancer and Crohn’s disease.
