The first dispensary for medical marijuana in Minnesota is set to open in Minneapolis on Wednesday, July 1.
That is the first day the it can be legally sold in the state.
Minnesota Medical Solutions invited journalists to tour their new facility at 207 9th St. in Minneapolis on Friday. The tour was hosted by Kyle Kingsley, MD, CEO of Minnesota Medical Solutions.
The marijuana is sold only in pill, tincture and oil forms. The products are color-coded to make it easier for patients to obtain the correct type of cannabis for their particular condition.
State law only allows a small number of diseases or conditions to qualify for cannabis treatment.
"Some folks will be able to come in once they are established," said Kingsley. "They know what they want. It will be very similar to a Walgreens, where they pick up their exact prescription, their exact medication."
Kingsley insisted that security at the patient center will not be a problem.
"You have to go through two gated doors to get in. and this is very reinforced glass in the front and essentially it's really hard for anybody to get access to anything that's valuable here," said Kingsley. "I think this is going to be a pretty undesirable target for crime."
Even though fewer than 200 physicians in Minnesota and a few dozen patients have registered for the cannabis products, Kingsley said he is optimistic.
"We're really surprised by the number of physicians who have signed up in the registry," said Kingsley. "That is very encouraging. If you look at the total numbers in Colorado versus where we are in Minnesota, it is pretty impressive. So, we see that as a leading indicator and we're very optimistic."
Kingsley said Minnesota Medical Solutions is already expanding their growing facility in Otsego, Minnesota, assuming demand will be growing. Already the Otsego facility has produced more than a ton of marijuana, according to Kingsley.
Minnesota Medical Solutions is one of two manufacturing facilities for medicinal marijuana in Minnesota. The other is Leafline Labs in Cottage Grove. They intend to open a dispensary in Eagan.
