Hibbing, MN - The Minnesota Department of Health named the first manufacturers in the state's new medical marijuana program Monday, December 1st.
A typical day for 8—year—old Amelia, is different from most kids.
"It's taken all of her quality of life. Just every day is seizures, seizures, seizures, said mother Angie Weaver.
Diagnosed with Drivae Syndrome—a catastrophic form of Epilepsy—Amelia relies on medical cannabis to ease her suffering.
"So on an average day for Amelia, she's having 30 to 80 drop seizures, then she also has 1—10 grand mall seizures a day," said Weaver.
While Amelia's battle with Epilepsy continues, today is a special day for her family. The Minnesota Department of Health announced that two companies will grow, process, and distribute medical marijuana across the state, including Amelia's hometown of Hibbing.
"Minnesota will have the best run medical cannabis treatment systems in America. Minnesotan's will be proud their state is doing things the right way, says Kyle Kingsley, Minnesota Minnesota Solutions.
One of those proud Minnesotans is Amelia's mother Angie, who testified in front of the legislature a year ago to push for distribution in Minnesota.
"To have gone through this journey and to have fought so hard and to be able to get the medicine my daughter needs in this state is—you know—it makes me emotional," said Weaver.
Especially after her Amelia's family exhausted over 23 options of anti—epileptic medications, and none have proven to work.
"People that are suffering like this deserve the best medicine to treat their symptoms," Weaver said.
The companies are one step closer to providing medical relief to patients starting July 1, 20—15.
