Changes adopted last year by the Michigan legislature to the state's 2008 Medical Marijuana law were detailed at Thursday's meeting of the Coldwater Township Sunrise Rotary Club. Branch County Sheriff's Department Deputy Steve Foster said amendments to the law have created major headaches for his department. He outlined their efforts to keep up with the changes for how marijuana can be used, cultivated, and produced for qualified patients and registered caregivers.

Foster didn't mince words when he recalled what he told a State legislator he met in Coldwater not long after the amended law was passed in Lansing. He said lawmakers don't bother to think before taking action, don't ask questions, and don't look for input, and then stick the police with the task of figuring out how to enforce the changes in the law.

In June this summer, there was an overflow crowd at the Coldwater Township Hall as a township committee was looking into what's called the 2016 Medical Marijuana Facilities Licensing Act and a large majority said they didn't want any such marijuana facility in the township. Two weeks later, Township Supervisor Don Rogers announced they were not going to pursue any proposals to locate a medical marijuana facility in the township.
