A marijuana dispensary has decided to close its doors after business hours on Sunday.
The Reef, a City of Detroit approved dispensary, is closing in order to be in total compliance with the state by cooperating with the Executive Marijuana Board.
The five-member marijuana licensing board met last week to discuss a motion to close all Michigan marijuana dispensaries while more formal state guidelines are developed.
The board tabled the motion until Tuesday, but it is indicated that the board will eventually vote in favor of closing all dispensaries in Michigan until each one is licensed through the state.
Dispensaries that do not close by the appointed date set by the board may not be eligible for a license under the new licensing system that will soon be put into place.
The Executive Marijuana Board cannot limit the number of licenses available to qualified businesses but each will have to be betted through an extensive background check before being considered for a license.
The Reef decided to take a proactive approach in anticipation of any ruling and wants to be in total compliance with the state by cooperating with the board and the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs.
"In our endeavor to stay compliant with LARA and the Licensing Board of the State of Michigan, we've decided to proactively close our doors to strive and stay in compliance with the state, and work through the proper channels of state licensing," said a spokesman for The Reef.
"We would like to set a good example as we have done in the past with our municipal licensing. We're here for our patients, and we believe the board also is fighting to complete the licensing process as fast as possible so the patients can return to getting their medicine."
