The doctor who invented the liquid form of methadone now used to treat heroin addicts was in Colorado Wednesday to talk about new cannabis research.
Stephen Goldner tells News 5 the community should embrace any efforts to end heroin addiction. He notes that the local outcry over the Monument clinic is unfounded, as he believes it will actually decrease crime in the area.
"They are surrounded by medical personnel, people that can actually help them," he says of patients in methadone clinics, "some of those people's lives will truly be saved."
Goldner was in Walsenburg to address the Colorado Cannabis Growers Association and highlighted the importance of developing newer, better treatments for illness using cannabis. His latest project is a marijuana-based version of methadone, which he says will be more holistic.
Goldner was once a New York City forensic toxicologist. Of the more than 18,000 bodies he examined, he says he never saw one person who died from marijuana. He owns a cannabis research laboratory, where he continues to discover new uses for the plant.
