ok. The only thing I left out is that it's in about a 2.5 gallon container. I've been watering lightly as needed. No nutes yet but I will probably use the Fox Farms trio. The light is a 125w natural light cfl. Matilda is about 5 inches below the light. I have another 100watt cfl I can use if necessary. She hangs out with regular house plants at the moment. I don't have a fan or any meters just yet. I'm considering attempting to flux her (loved the way Leialoha turned out for snidrajsed).
Oh. The seed shell stuck. I impatiently worked the shell off and ripped a cotyledon. I guess it will even itself out.

Well my number one fan, sign me up for the long haul. I am so glad to be a part of Matilda's caretaker team. Losing a cotyledon is not the end of the world for her, she may need nutes a tad sooner than previously expected, since she's only got half the food she would have had stored up in there. No worries though, she's looking healthy and vibrant.

Looking forward to seeing many more instalments here, good luck Metalpoet, and...

I have been uncertain how close to keep the light. No one wants a leggy plant. I was gradually lowering the light (125w cfl) until it was 5" from the plant. It seemed warm so I turned the fan on. Two days ago it had leaf edge curl. I raised the light. Yesterday leaf curl was worse. I raised the light to about 12 inches above the plant. I took other measures to lower the temp (it's normal room temp, maybe in a warm-ish corner) and turned the fan off. Today it seems better.
Also: Fungus gnats have been an issue. As I said, Matilda was keeping company with my house plants, but when the gnats showed up I put the house plants outside for now. I put the sticky pest cards in the pot and let it "dry" out which may have also stressed the plant, but the fungus gnats seem to be gone.
Things to do: get ph meter, moisture meter, nutes, and fluxing materials.
It's about to get exciting!

To strong of a constant breeze can also cause leaves to curl up, was your fan directly blowing on the plant or circulating the air. Sounds like you caused and fixed a problem on your own, as for large cfl bulbs I'd just lower it by 1" increments for a few days and "dial" it in. But note that it will be able to be closer once your plant's foliage matures and can protect itself with oils and whatnot.
Fungus gnats eh? Brutal! Just make sure you're more persistent than they are. Do you have any food grade pesticide to use so you can kill eggs and larvae? Sticky strips are great for catching mature ones though. :thumb:
Good little shopping list there, good luck with the hunt.

I am so happy to have everyone's help and/or spiritual
support. I'm new to the forums and am still figuring how the site works so please don't be offended if I haven't liked or responded to an entry just yet. (Also, the bf has placed squatter's rights on my laptop so I have to use my phone making everything just a bit more difficult).
DAY 14: minor issues continue with the gnats, but it's getting better. I have some new meters--- nothing very good, but it's what I can afford at this time.PH looks okay...not great.... Waiting to water to add minor nutes. I see some tiny yellowing and a pinhole on one of the leaves. I also managed to tear a leaf when I removed the yellow sticky pest card. Yep. Poor Matilda. Still, I think it's going well. I think I'm going to top her in a few days. I need a little more room above the 3rd node.

Happy weekend, everyone!
I wanted to take a minute to explain my hopes for Matilda. First and foremost, she needs to be compact and as stealthy as possible. I chose NL because it supposedly stinks (not that I don't love the smell, mind you) less while growing. I would like it to be potent weed, but I don't need huge yields. I am a one-plant person so Matilda gets a lot of attention, but I can't give her much more room or light... maybe just one extra small led for color spectrum? or is that even necessary? I know there are better ways of doing this and elite growers will get the heebie-jeebies, but I'm hoping for a fun and interesting growing experience... and an inexpensive (ha!) smoking experience. :)
Day 17: Got called into work and the bf raised the light on Matilda when she got a bit warm. It may have been a bit too far because she grew a bit lanky yesterday and overnight.

Had to set the bf down and explain that it was time to top Matilda. He was aghast at first, but he understands that it's in her best interest; that she will be able to grow strong and sturdy, but short and solid.
OFF WITH HER HEAD!

and there she is. LST begins now-ish. Pics to come. That 3rd node seems a little high to me, but I will make it work.:welcome:

Day 18: Coming along nicely after topping--- but am I done??? I wasn't sure if I was supposed to remove the growth from the first node now or if I should wait. I re-read some of my favorite journals (snid, la, dirt, +) and couldn't find an exact answer. I know some growers remove everything below the 3rd node and then grow from 2 main stems, but I'm hoping for the tight symmetry that snid got with his plant, Leialoha. At any rate, it was either remove the 1st node growth now or later so I did it this morning. I am currently just trying to keep her leaves pulled out of the way of real growth.
I added a little lemon juice to the water to get the ph down and the soil, which had a slight tendency to alkalinity (FFOF?), and the soil ph is now about 6.8, good. Also gave the first full dose of vegetative nutes yesterday.
On a side note: What varieties of weed do you consider a particularly "pretty" plant? I'm already thinking about the next possible grow.

Carnival is a good little plant known for its energetic high. It's a daytime smoke. A pick me up, if you will. Stop on over to our journal. We've got a boat load of varieties in there. Lol. Link is in my signature.

EDIT: I'm adding my link below since you are new and on a phone. It's not very easy to find a journal you haven't been to yet on the phone. Just trying to make it easier on you. Have a good day!
