About 200 people have filled a Boca Raton ballroom today to hear experts in the field of the medical use of marijuana. Many say they seeking business opportunities and others say they or a family member needs the medicine. Florida lawmakers this year passed a law allowing a form of medical marijuana known as Charlotte's Web, but it is limited to a small number of patients suffering afflictions such as extreme seizures and spasms.
In November, Florida voters will decide whether to expand the number of people who can be treated, allowing it to be determined by a physician. Marijuana advocate Renee Petro of the Tampa area attended the gathering. She said her son Branden, 12, suffers daily seizures: "I have to do everything in my power. I am not ashamed." Florida resident Jacel Delgadillo Florida says he will take his sick son Bruno, 3, to Colorado for cannabis treatment until it's legal in Florida in 2015, if the amendment passes. "We will be refugees," he said.
"Canna-Ed Day" – for cannabis education – runs from noon until 6 p.m. at the Renaissance Marriott Hotel. Other topics being discussed include cultivation, distribution, licensing of growers, security, cannabis use by seniors, and Charlotte's Web, the non-euphoric cannabis product approved by Florida law to treat conditions and illnesses such as epilepsy, Lou Gehrig's disease and cancer. The conference is sponsored by the Florida Cannabis Coalition, which recently staged a similar event in Orlando.
According to the organizers, some of the experts who will speak come from Colorado and Washington state, where marijuana is legal for both medicinal use and recreational use. "There is a thirst for information about cannabis, from potential patients to businesses owners and investors," said Tom Quigley, CEO of the coalition. "We recognize this increased demand for the critical information we provide at our events, such as the rapidly evolving processing, packaging and portion size trends for cannabis edibles and new alternative delivery methods. Our finger is on the pulse of the industry to prepare our members for legalization in Florida and designed Canna-Ed Day to be the most accessible, highest quality cannabis educational business event to ever hit the Sunshine State."
