The upcoming session in Carson City may prove to be historical for medical marijuana users. Of course, that was the thought back in 2000 as well.
State Senator-elect Tick Segerblom has proposed legislation to allow dispensaries in the Silver State.
The use and possession of medical marijuana is legal in Nevada for people who have received a doctor's recommendation. However, the law does not allow the existence of dispensaries to distribute marijuana. Currently, there are roughly 3,500 people that have the cards, but must grow their own marijuana.
Voters approved medical marijuana back in 2000 and the law allows each person with a card to grow as many as three mature and four immature marijuana plants and have on hand no more than 1 ounce of usable marijuana.
Nevadans can travel to California to obtain the drug, but it is unregulated and Segerblom believes Nevada is losing out on a huge revenue stream.
Segerblom's bill calls for the medical marijuana to be taxed at a rate that is unknown currently.
Segerblom is an attorney who was elected to the Senate in November after serving in the Assembly from 2007-2011.
