Jackson City Council members will consider approving medical marijuana restrictions on Tuesday after 18 months of work on an ordinance.
A package of three proposed ordinances to regulate medical marijuana will go before the Jackson City Council for tentative approval. Council members would consider final approval at a subsequent meeting.
The medical marijuana ordinances being considered would ban existing and future dispensaries, City Attorney Julius Giglio has said. Dispensaries are businesses that provide medical marijuana to patients. There are a handful in the city.
The council's city affairs committee is recommending approval of a medical marijuana ordinance that says qualifying patients and primary caregivers would be allowed to grow and use the drug only in their homes.
Local medical marijuana advocates have said that is too restrictive and will likely be challenged in court.
The city of Jackson has had a moratorium on any new medical marijuana dispensaries since January 2011 while city officials have worked on regulations. Michigan voters made medical marijuana legal in 2008, but many local governments have approved restrictions.
The Jackson City Council on Tuesday also will consider extending the moratorium because officials don't expect any new ordinance to take effect until after the current moratorium expires.
The meeting is at 7 p.m. in the second-floor council chambers at Jackson City Hall, 161 W. Michigan Ave.
