South Carolina - House Minority Leader Todd Rutherford said Wednesday he wants voters to have a voice on whether South Carolina should allow medical marijuana. Rutherford, D-Richland, sponsored a bill to allow some patients use marijuana as part of their treatment. He said a non-binding referendum on the issue will be part of the Democratic primary ballot on June 10. Voters can tell lawmakers how they feel on the issue, he said. "While this may be the first year we are talking about medical marijuana in South Carolina, we are lagging behind the rest of the nation," Rutherford said during a news conference Wednesday.
At the news conference at the State House lobby, several S.C. residents spoke about their experiences with their conditions or relatives who could have benefited from medical marijuana. The bill comes a week after the House passed a bill that allows cannabis oil to be used by those with severe epilepsy. In addition to epilepsy, many health conditions could benefit from medical marijuana, said Chris Raffield of Sumter, suffers from pain, nausea, lower back issues and loss of appetite. He pays about $800 a month for a synthetic marijuana drug, Raffield said. "It would help me tremendously," he said.
