Medical marijuana patients are collaborating to help educate each other on different forms of cannabis. They held the first of a series of discussions Sunday at the Speakeasy Vape Lounge in Colorado Springs.
Dozens gathered at the cannabis club to listen, learn and share about medical marijuana and cannabis, a service they are hard-pressed to find elsewhere. One participant shared with the audience, "If I want to go to sleep or I'm in serious pain, I'm reaching for the heaviest indica I can find."
"It's against the law for any dispensaries to tell you any information, saying hey try this for this medicine or this for this disease or this for this," explains organizer and owner of Smoke Screen Productions Mike Wise, "so you get your medical card and you don't see that doctor for another year."
A group of patients and marijuana entrepreneurs got together to organize the educational series, creating a forum among patients. The owner of Speakeasy, Jaymen Johnson, says all too often he sees people new to the state who are unfamiliar with the wide variety of marijuana products and their uses. "If they try the wrong strain or go the wrong way with it," he says, "it may be something where they decide it's not for them when it could benefit them, or maybe they have an adverse reaction they weren't looking for."
Army veteran Dave Gambrell says he is already learning new ways to combat his PTSD by talking to other patients. He is looking forward to working with other veterans who need help finding the right treatment for them. Gambrell says, "It's made me understand and be aware of what others are using, getting positive feedback and being able to utilize that within my own personal medication on a daily basis."
Organizers are using different cannabis clubs around town to host the meetings, highlighting the venues as a positive space for the marijuana community. They hope to grow into a community of activists that take medical patients' issues to the Capitol.
The next meeting is April 9 at the Dab Lounge.
