Medical Marijuana Patients Denied Organ Transplants

The Huffington Post has a very interesting article that says that medical marijuana users in the 14 states that currently allow the use of the otherwise illegal substance to treat medical conditions – presumably including Michigan – are routinely being denied the right to get organ transplants at hospitals around the country.

For in the now fourteen states that allow legal medicinal use of cannabis, a registered patient in need of a life-saving organ transplant will be disqualified for "abuse of illicit substances."...

All across America, hospitals are booting patients off of organ transplant lists because of their use of cannabis. Being a legal user of cannabis for medicinal purposes in the now fourteen states that recognize that right is of no help; even legal medical marijuana patients are essentially given a death sentence by hospital and insurance bureaucracies for their use of a safe, non-toxic herbal remedy.

This could be a particularly important issue in Michigan because the University of Michigan Hospital is one of the nation's premiere transplant centers, performing hundreds of organ transplants every year.

This is BULLSHIT!

Nobody should be denied medical care for what they choose to do in their own time, whether they test positive for H******, C*******, M*******, or anything else. Would you deny an alcoholic his lifesaving liver transplant because his habitual use of alcohol gave him cirrhosis? NO! Cannabis doesn't even cause damage to any organs that might need replaced anyway, and alcohol most certainly does.

What is their logic? Half of the people they are rejecting are likely using cannabis to treat their organ failure symptoms in the first place. If Obama ever does get his healthcare bill passed, I hope that there's a passage about not denying coverage to illicit substance users, 'cause these people are a bunch of money-grubbing assholes that deny coverage at the slightest excuse.
