Mention medical marijuana and you can expect a lot of jokes, but it is also drawing some serious debate on mlive.
The Jackson City Council adopted a six-month moratorium on new medical marijuana facilities that runs through Aug. 24. Now the City Affairs committee is trying to determine how to regulate medical marijuana facilities once the moratorium expires.
Responding to jokes about the "munchies," DUHtch said many strains of cannabis actually suppress the appetite.
"Silly ignorant jokes aside there is a serious need for real education, research and compassion regarding cannabis and its medical value."
Several posters criticized city official's handling of the matter, but geek49203 said they are trying to do the best they can with the state medical marijuana law.
"The law is a bad law. Until you get a better law, you should expect bad responses to it."
Victor_Vicious said he wished city officials would listen to the experts before they set regulations.
"Patients are never a part of the discussion group, and Doctors don't seem to be taking part either, Strange, you would think you might at least get their opinion."
Speaking of experts, the Jackson Human Relations Commission will hear a presentation Wednesday on the state medical marijuana law and how it relates to Jackson.
Roger Maufort, director of the Jackson County Compassion Club; Robert Gaecke, a local defense attorney; and Dr. Timur Baruti, a family medicine practitioner, will make the presentation and participate in a brief question-and-answer session.
The meeting is at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in the council chambers on the second floor of City Hall, 161 W. Michigan Ave.
