Medical Marijuana Moratorium Recommended

The Mason County Planning Commission decided the sale or transfer of medical marijuana should not be classified as a retail use in the Mason County Zoning Ordinance, and voted to recommend the Mason County Board of Commissioners adopt a six-month moratorium on medical marijuana in the county.

Mason County Zoning Director Mary Reilly said she had a request to dispense medical marijuana out of the location currently occupied by Plant Paradise, a business that sells products to grow medical marijuana.

Curtis Fairfield, a co-owner of Plant Paradise, said the medical marijuana dispensary would be a separate entity with a separate entrance for customers. He likened the dispensing or transfer of medical marijuana to what is done at a pharmacy with prescriptions, which are classified as retail in the county's zoning ordinance.

Currently there is no language on medical marijuana in the county's zoning ordinance.

Michigan's medical marijuana law describes qualifying patients and registered caregivers. It does not define any land uses.
