Las Vegas - More than a hundred people came to fill out paperwork in hopes of securing a future gig in the budding Southern Nevada pot business. Many of the people coming out don't know a lot about cannabis, "but with jobs the way they are right now, they're willing to learn," says advocate and volunteer Vicki Higgins. Compassion Nevada Consulting offers resources for people who want a medical marijuana card, teaches the legal issues with using and growing weed, and now helps people find work. "What we're doing is collecting a database of 4/20-friendly employees looking for jobs with 4/20-friendly employers," says cannabis advocate Robert Paul.
CNC founder Adam Sternberg is a cancer survivor. He says there will be hundreds of jobs once licensing and regulations are complete. "Everything from patient relations to office and clerical, to cultivation experts, to edible and infused extraction people; even janitors and security guards," says Sternberg. He says looking our for members of the community is his first priority. For the dozens here, it's not just filling out an application. You will also have to undergo a rigorous background check. Higgins says they won't take people with money laundering, violence, and/or drug trafficking charges in their past. And Sternberg says not only will they weed out those ineligle, his workforce will be educated. "We'll be offering HIPPA classes, first aid, CPR and continued education classes at CNC to train this workforce for future employers," says Sternberg.
In Clark County, prospective marijuana business owners have another deadline. May 9th is the deadline for submitting deeds or lease agreements and FBI background reports. In Las Vegas, the Council has voted to move forward with allowing medical pot in the city limits. However, the council also extended a moratorium on accepting license applications until July 2nd to allow staff to gather public comment and draft licensing regulations. There has been talk within the North Las Vegas Council to allow medical pot sales but so far no votes have taken place.
