Medical marijuana patients might not be able to access their benefits - such as purchasing more potent products or buying in larger quantities - when Friday's new regulations go into effect, according to the state Department of Health.

The department issued a news release Tuesday stating its medical marijuana authorization database software might not be ready by Friday due to "software challenges."

Medical marijuana patients entered into the database will gain some benefits, including the ability to grow additional plants, forgo state sales tax and gain an affirmative action defense.

Spokesman David Johnson said the Department of Health is still striving to meet Friday's deadline.

"We are working with the contractor to fix some of the challenges with the software," Johnson said in the statement.

The department will issue an update no later than Thursday if it is unable to meet the deadline, according to the release.

Friday's deadline is part of the Cannabis Patient Protection Act, which places the unregulated medical marijuana industry under the same regulations as recreational marijuana.
