Joy Patterson with the Community Development Department says a federal crackdown last year on dispensaries and their landlords forced many Sacramento pot shops to move, "You're supposed to be 600 feet from youth-oriented facilities, religious congregations, movie theaters and you need to be 300 feet from residential. Sometimes, they can't find locations that meet all the criteria."
City staff is looking at the possibility of extending the buffer zones from 600 feet to 1000 feet.
Patterson says at least 16 dispensaries have closed since the federal crackdown last November.
In July of this year, the city council's law and legislation committee could not come to a decision on a motion making it easier for dispensaries to move or on a motion eliminating outdoor growing operations. Because the committee could not agree, the issues come back before the full council.
