Pinal County Sheriff's deputies have arrested a 23-year-old Eloy man who was in possession for six times the amount of marijuana allowed for a medical marijuana cardholder.
Kirk Hutchins also was in possession of $10,000 in cash.
Tuesday night, a PCSO deputy conducted a traffic stop on a Hyundai Elantra on I-10 at milepost 205.
A strong odor of marijuana was emanating from the inside of the vehicle.
Hutchins, the driver, showed his deputy his medical marijuana card and two grams of marijuana in a container.
A records check showed Hutchins' license was suspended. Hutchins was placed under arrest.
The odor of marijuana continued to emanate from the vehicle, and the deputy became more suspicious.
A search of the vehicle revealed two pounds of packaged and vacuum-sealed hydroponics, as well as stacks of cash totaling over $10,000, according to PCSO. Drug paraphernalia was also seized from the vehicle.
Hutchins was booked on charges of possession, transportation and sale of marijuana, and driving on a suspended license.
"This case demonstrates the underlying concern facing law enforcement as it relates to the medical marijuana law. Mr. Hutchins may have had the legal means to obtain approved medicinal marijuana, but he's clearly abusing the system," Sheriff Paul Babeu said.
The Arizona State Legislature has designated that a qualifying patient be allowed 2.5 ounces of "usable marijuana" for personal medical use.
