A medical marijuana ordinance, the proposed 2012-13 budget and the city's purchase of two houses to be rehabilitated go before the Jackson City Council on Tuesday.

The City Council will hold a special meeting at 7 p.m. in the second-floor council chambers at city hall, 161 W. Michigan Ave.

A proposed medical marijuana ordinance will regulate where medicinal marijuana can be grown, provided and used in the city. A city committee has been considering a medical marijuana ordinance proposed by the city attorney's office.

Michigan voters approved medical marijuana in 2008. Since then many communities have tried to regulate the drug. Jackson has had a moratorium on any new medical marijuana dispensaries while officials have worked on the ordinance.

City Council members also will consider approving the budget for next fiscal year. They had been scheduled to do so a week earlier, but Mayor Martin Griffin and council members decided they wanted the council's finance committee to further review the proposal from City Manager Larry Shaffer.

Among other things, the finance committee decided to recommend eliminating city funding to The Enterprise Group, the county's economic development agency, and try to convince other local governments and the private sector to contribute more to the group.

The purchase of two houses to be rehabilitated and then resold also has been discussed previously. At its last meeting, the City Council deadlocked 3-3 on approving the purchase of the two houses using federal grant dollars.

One is in the 800 block of W. Washington Avenue and the other is in the 700 block of S. Grinnell Street.
