A bill by Sen. Steve Murphy again seeks to legitimize medical marijuana for use by seriously ill patients.
The bill by Murphy, DFL-Red Wing, will get its first hearing of the session in a Senate health panel on Wednesday.
The bill would allow patients suffering from cancer, AIDS, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer's disease and other dehabilitating conditions to smoke marijuana to deal with pain and other symptoms.
The Minn. Health Department would keep a list of authorized medical marijunan users.
Gov. Tim Pawlenty has long stood agaisnt the bill, saying it would make drug laws more difficult to enforce.
Minnesota lawmakers have considered a medical marijuana bill for ten years now, without signing off. Two years ago, the full Senate passed the bill.
