The Illinois House may vote on a bill to legalize medical marijuana today, the sponsor, Rep. Lou Lang, D-Skokie, said this morning.
"As of this moment I have enough committed votes to pass the bill if, number one, everyone's here, and, number two, everyone told me the truth," Lang said.
The bill would allow people receiving treatment for cancer, AIDS and other illnesses to use marijuana for pain and nausea alleviation, with a doctor's permission and state certification.
The medical marijuana measure fell seven votes short of the 60 votes needed for passage during the November veto session. The Senate passed the bill (SB1381) earlier this year, so House approval would send it to the governor's desk.
Opponents fear that legalizing marijuana for medical purposes could open the door for recreational use.
