Medical Marijuana Bill Dies, Referendum Introduced

OLYMPIA, Wash — There's another twist in the battle over how to regulate medical marijuana in Washington. A cannabis advocacy group has filed a referendum to overturn the legislation largely vetoed by Governor Chris Gregoire.

The group behind the referendum says the current law doesn't clarify rules for medical marijuana dispensaries. The referendum comes just hours after a last ditch effort to revive the dispensary issue died in the Washington legislature.

The bill's sponsor, Senator Jeanne Kohl-Welles, says she hasn't give up.

Sen. Jeanne Kohl-Welles: "I will work during the interim between this session and when we begin again next January to determine what would be the best way to move forward."

Kohl-Welles's bill came up just one vote short in committee. Republican Senator Mike Hewitt voted for the original bill but said he didn't vote for the second because it wasn't part of the task at hand for the special session: passing a state budget.
