As the closure deadline for Los Angeles medical marijuana dispensaries draws near, advocates of the medicinal herb have gathered thousands of petition signatures in an attempt to overturn the city's recent ban on storefront dispensaries.
Opposition to the ban wasted no time in creating a petition and collecting signatures in hopes of forcing a referendum election after the City Council voted to ban dispensaries in July. Medical marijuana supporters plan to submit 50,000 petition signatures to the Los Angeles City Clerk's Office on Wednesday. A minimum of 27,425 signatures are required to have the issue placed on the ballot.
Referendum proponent Norma Schaffer told City News Service, "We want a strict regulatory system in place to ensure safe access for patients and a nuisance-free process for neighborhoods." Schaffer added, "This one-size-fits-all ban not only hurts patients, but it eliminates dispensaries playing by the rules while doing little to shut down rogue dispensaries."
Scheduled to become effective September 6, the ban mandates that all dispensaries in L.A. must shut down by said date; if dispensaries fail to comply, they face court action and a $2,500 fine for each day they remain open past the deadline. Medical marijuana users do, however, have the right under the ordinance to collectively grow and share marijuana in homes or apartments. The number of growers is limited to two or three primary caregivers or patients.
In case you're wondering why all 1,046 suspected dispensaries operating within the city of L.A. are under attack, the City Council cited "conflicting court opinions about whether the city can legally regulate cannabis collectives" at the time of the ban vote, according to CNS.
In other medical marijuana ban opposition news, Patient Care Alliance, Los Angeles (PCA-LA), a medical marijuana trade association with more than 300 L.A.-based dispensaries, recently announced that it has filed suit against the City of Los Angeles.
Schaffer also told reporters, "We're confident the voters of Los Angeles will agree with us." Well, L.A., do you agree?
