Advocates for expanding the use of medical marijuana made their case to state lawmakers on Tuesday.
This year, Gov. Bill Haslam signed a bill that allowed small amounts of cannabis oil for some medical conditions.
Tuesday, a Senate committee discussed a proposal from Sen. Steve Dickerson, R-Nashville, that would create a system to legally grow, process, sell and use marijuana for medicinal purposes in the state.
Law enforcement officials from across the state spoke out against the measure. Some said it would lead to a large number of unintended consequences in prosecuting cases.
But Meg Sanders, the operator of a cannabis dispensary in Colorado, said people don't have a clear grasp on the issue.
"What we're talking about with this bill is not what you would normally think of with cannabis," Sanders said. "It's not ground-up flower, it's not pre-rolled joints. That's not what we're talking about. We're talking about extracts from the plant of oil that are put into medicinal-type products that you then use at a specific dosage, which we recommend 10 milligrams, and used with medical devices that control those doses."
Medical and recreational marijuana is legal in Colorado.
Early this year, Dickerson's measure was sent to summer study, a move often used to kill legislation.
