Medical Cannabis: Common Sense Prevails In Ireland

Irish health minister Mary Harney has voiced an opinion on the use of medical cannabis which will soon reverberate all the way to the seat of power in the cash-strapped UK.

Mrs Harney has said she is open to making cannabis a legal alternative to the pharmaceutical cocktails some people endure on a daily basis. Drugs which are often toxic given long term exposure to them.

In a statement released by the Department of Health and Children, it said it would seek European legal council as well as taking recommendations from experts in the field.

Ordinarily beaurocracy is a sloth-like beast when it comes to making tricky decisions but in this instance Mrs Harney has alluded to a position being taken on medical marijuana by the years end. Which is only three months away so this is clearly a priority for the Irish government.

Its quite a turn around within the space of a year as Mrs Harney said only recently in parliament that she did not in fact, support a change in the laws to allow the use of medical cannabis.

So whats changed?

Ireland, like every EU member-state has struggled in the shadow of the economic downturn and has only recently bowed to financial industry pressure to save the Anglo Irish Bank corp with a government hand out. A move many suggested could bankrupt the Republic.

Manageable
Ireland's Finance Minister Brian Lenihan refuted the accusation saying the bailout of Anglo Irish Bank Corp won't bankrupt the country and the costs are 'manageable.'

Be that as it may Eire is still struggling to lay its hands on some petty cash.

Meanwhile in California the State Board of Equalization already collects around $100 million per year in sales taxes from medical cannabis dispensaries.

Now, the agency is laying the groundwork to collect an estimated $1.3 billion more per year as the outright legalisation of cannabis appears under the label 'Proposition 19' on the California ballot in November. A vote many experts are forecasting will go the way of the legalisation movement.

Its a cash bonanza governments are going to struggle to ignore for much longer as the fiasco brought about by the financial industry bites even deeper.

Currently all the money made from cannabis sales finds its way into the criminal underworld. But by supporting the use of medical cannabis Ireland must hope to divert at least a percentage of that cash into the governments coffers.

The Department of Health and Children has been quick to point out there was "no question" of the Minister legalising the recreational use cannabis.

Not at least, until they have spent this windfall first.
