The Massachusetts Department of Public Health has approved medical marijuana regulations, and Dr. Bruce Bedrick says they're the best in the country.

There are a lot of perceptions floating around out there about medical marijuana, but Dr. Bruce Bedrick, a naturopathic chiropractor who is the CEO of Kind Clinics, LLC and Medbox, Inc., is quick to push them aside as nothing short of false.

"Somehow, in the machinations of their brains, people think medical marijuana dispensaries are low class, grimy street corners," Bedrick said. "They're professional and look like doctor's offices. Fifty percent of the patients are over 40. A lot of these arguments aren't true."

In a recent interview, Bedrick talked about how there is this vision by some people that people "will be coming through walls" to break into the dispensaries and rob them, but that in reality medical marijuana is no different than any other prescription pain killer. A medical marijuana dispensary is simply a pharmacy, Bedrick said.

"We typically get a faction of the religious right or conservative full of uneducated perceptions and they're all wrong," Bedrick said. "In 20 years we'll look back and laugh."

Bedrick's companies provide medical marijuana dispensary-support in the form of behind-the-counter dispensing machines and licensing services for cannabis-based healthcare products. The Medbox, Inc. system is an armored, automated, biometrically controlled dispensing and storage system for medicine and merchandise.

The Public Health Council recently approved medical marijuana regulations that the Massachusetts Department of Public Health developed. These regulations put a system in place that tracks the marijuana from seed-to-sale, as well as puts in various safety measures.

"Massachusetts is really the gold standard," Bedrick said. "The state oversees everything. It's the tightest, most open state. The state went above and beyone. They've spoken to people, they did research and it's tightly regulated."

Bedrick was asked about Natick and other towns altering zoning laws because of medical marijuana. He reiterated how he didn't see the point of doing that because the dispensary is simply a pharmacy, and then people would take the marijuana home to where they live.

"These are patients," Bedrick said. "They're not people grabbing a 10-year-old and shoving it down their throat."

The idea of medical marijuana in Massachusetts is still a new concept, but the voters let their voice be heard in November so it looks like it is shere to stay. It's not clear when patients will finally be able to be prescribed marijuana in the Commonwealth, but Bedrick thinks it could take some time.

"It's still early," he said. "There might be some changes [to the regulations]. It could be a year away. We still don't know."
