Maryland's Senate president says he believes a medical marijuana measure passed by the House of Delegates will move favorably in the Senate.
Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller on Tuesday noted both the House's approval of the bill and the support of Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene Secretary Joshua Sharfstein, a member of Gov. Martin O'Malley's cabinet.
The House voted 108-28 Monday for the bill, which would put the state on a path to developing a medical marijuana program in the next few years.
The legislation would create a state commission to oversee medical marijuana programs at academic medical research centers that decide to participate.
Last week, the Senate voted 30-16 to decriminalize the possession of less than 10 grams of marijuana.
