A new medical marijuana dispensary that has opened in Winnipeg's Exchange District doesn't actually sell weed on site but instead allows clients with a prescription to have it mailed to them.
Weeds Glass and Gifts Ltd., a Vancouver-based company with locations in British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec, officially opened its first Manitoba location on Adelaide Street on Friday.
"We're just working on getting the place painted and spruced up and loading it up with glass and all the other things you need for cannabis consumption," said Donald Briere, the company's owner and operator.
"We also have knowledgeable people giving out information."
Customers can buy pipes and other smoking products at the shop, but they cannot get any marijuana behind the counter.
Instead, store staff can help customers - provided they show photo identification and proof from a doctor that they need medical marijuana - and place orders through the company's website, with the orders delivered by mail within a couple of days.
Briere said the point of the shop is to educate people on the benefits of using marijuana, as well as sell paraphernalia.
While some other dispensaries in Winnipeg have been raided by police in the past, he said he isn't worried.
Weeds Glass and Gifts has a different business model than other shops, and it has paid its required business taxes, Briere said, adding that it's very strict when it comes to purchasing marijuana.
"Clean, safe, pesticide-free, no mould or mildew and it did not come from organized crime," he said of his products.
"We demand that we get receipts for every purchase that we made. We have a name and a phone number and a personal production licence and or licensed producer."
The Winnipeg store is open seven days a week.
