Max's First Grow - Soil - LED - Painkiller XL

Poor HPS, about to be thrown out for the inferior solution!

Hahaha just messing with you Max, do what's right for your environment!

My 250W HPS is out in the open during the day and has plenty of air to keep temps at 88F

Girls love it. I can get PPM up to 1000 and they wouldn't burn. But then I went to 1350, whoops...

Anyway good luck on the quest to hard compact buds Max

I have a 4x4 tent and 2 600w HPS/MH lights currently and a 6" fan. One is a cool tube and the other is the different air cooled hood. My tent runs at 81 degrees. My intake is ambient house temp of 65 degrees. It was well worth the money to say the least.

Welcome Nismo and thanks for the comments. That's a couple of people with good temperature control coming out in favour of 6" fans.

Thanks Vlad. HPS makes me nervous. I've ordered a Mars II 900 to go with my 400. Over 90 real watts per foot between them so it shouldn't be too shabby :-)

:high-five: fellow 900 user.

:)

I forgot you used the 900 in your grow because I have it in my head you're a Spyder man :-)

It's great to know you used the 900 to great effect. I think that's dispelled any worries I have about light performance. If results are off it's down to me, not the light. I was actually after the new Epistar model because the price difference was quite small, but they aren't in the UK yet so once the $75 shipping, 20% VAT and 3% import duty was added it suddenly became an outrageous difference. I'll reconsider once they hit the UK

If I was a capitalist willing to inject money into other person's business as a kind gesture, I'd buy the Spider LED lamp in a heartbeat. It has my favorite specs, build quality is okay, (it was taken apart in another thread), and people have good results with it so far that must at least compete with a 250W HPS or better...

Vlad:bongrip:

Edit, I see you got the 900. Sounds like a good pick Comrade.
See you at the finish line with big buds.:high-five:

You must rate the Spyder very highly to give it a 250w equivalent on the HPS-ometer ;-)

Yes, I got the Mars II 900. 385 real at-the-wall watts. I'm impressed with the 400 (173 real watts) so far.

There's just something suspicious about that pink light...

If I win a Mars 1200 from 420 this year I might just eat my own words though. We shall see... :passitleft:

Contests Gentlemen, aim high. Poor odds or not, it's still fun to participate.

In fairness, I have two 900s in a 4x4, not sure how exactly we'd have done with one instead.

I looked into the pro series, but man was it a jump in price at the time and some of the design decisions made me scratch my head (temp/humidity sensor in the remote not the light, WTF).

I'll have a 900 and a 400 over a 2' 4" square, so not so far off per square foot.

Yeah, the original Pro models were odd, but they've stripped the quarks and hadrons out whilst still keeping the same number of photons at a much reduced price. Check out the Pro II's. Great price if you manage to get one of the 40 available in the US warehouse. Not so good elsewhere once shipping, VAT and import duty add something like $130 to the ticket price.

just for future reference if you want a panel that really works check out ninthplanetled.com. Ive used them and pulled 20 dry oz per panel. I had imput on testing them. I wouldnt buy them myself because i just prefer hps, i get great results that no led grower on here could match in like for like space guaranteed.

But these LEds do work the best out of all the ones ive used. well worth checking out if thats the road you are headed down.

What is a planet? Some kind of super massive ball shaped object that got blasted out of nothingness by some random big bang that happened for no reason, and all of said balls continue catapulting into the empty void at 1,000,000 miles per hour and revolve at 1000 RPM??

What a cool religion because then there's dinosaurs and UFOs and all kinds of fun crap that garners a government seal of approval as well. Yup, no need for independent validation, just swallow this huge steaming load of officially sponsored poo or off to the crazy house for you!

:rant/off:

I will check that out. The super lamp that is

71 Days Old, 4 Weeks Flip, 2 Weeks Flower

3 days ago my Mars II 900 (385 true watts) arrived and was installed the second I got home from work. This joins my Mars II 400 (173 true watts)

Growth continues to be fast. I mean this in the flower development sense rather than vertical growth, although that still continues to happen. It seems like 80 - 90% of the energy is going into flower growth and the remaining 10 - 20% is going into stalk growth

The flowers love the LED but some of that bulk looks like the flowers getting fluffier. I can live with this for my first hobby grow.

They have a total of 111w/ft - this is true watts, not those spurious LED to HPS equivalent watts bandied about by LED manufacturers. I really think the LED makers shoot themselves in the foot with that bollocks. It makes it hard for noobs like me to get a handle on what to buy. I guess Mars II 385 just doesn't sound as good as Mars II 900.

The joy has come back into my little hobby as I'm not forever worried about temperatures. Things are steady at 85 degrees with those lovely 558 watts of light. I have nothing but respect for people that can set up multi HPS grows and keep sane temperatures, but I've decided I'm an LED kind of guy. The relief I felt at taking the HPS out of the tent was palpable. I'm keeping it in reserve though because I've heard that swapping from LED to HPS for the last 3 days of growth increases frost. We'll see if I can be bothered.

Changing from HPS to LED has caused little sparkly hairs to appear on the small leaves around the buds.. either that or the plants were ready to start getting a tiny bit of frost.

The Blueberry in the back corner was drooping quite badly yesterday so she got her weekend soak a day early. I tend to under water through the week and soak every Saturday or Sunday. I also add some water at the bottom on soak days as the last couple of times I've done this the plants exploded.

A few low down fan leaves are quite yellow so I'll add some extra N at the next feed - I'll use grow nutes rather than bloom nutes for that feed. I'm still using the lower end of nute quantities; recommendation is 2 - 4ml per litre and I always use 2. This is because I simply can't do a flush with the scrog in place.

Watching the flowers join together to form a 4" run of bud is thrilling.

Oh, I waffle. I'm just excited because the joy has returned to my grow, and to me the pleasure far outweighs the bonus of denser nugs I'd potentially get with HPS.

Hey max you ever considered using both your HPS and your LEDs together? Its not the LED itself thats making them frost. Most LEDs these days have UV on them, and our plants will make more trichomes to protect itself from the harmful UV. The trichomes actually reflect the UV rays. You can see this through infrared, its also how law enforcement agencies find your crops from the sky.

Hi Fopho, I was mixing LED and HPS for a while. Until Thursday there was a Mars II 400 and HPS 600 with digital ballast. Unfortunately I could only just run the HPS at 400w through the day when out at work, otherwise temps would top 100 degrees. It was taking over my life; some nights I don't come home and stay over with friends shooting the breeze. All that had to stop when I had HPS in the tent. Even at 400w temps would get too high. Life is much better now I'm not worried about decarbing on the vine.

Edit: +reps for the info on trichome UV reflectivity and thanks for the reps

Oh yea I remember now haha, that was you with the heat problems. Bleh, keep getting these journals all mixed up. I don't t blame ya lol 100° temps would give me a heart attack

100F is too much... 91F is what I'm getting, it's great.

There should be no rush...

The time will come when Max will have HPS again, after he sees my harvest in 30 days

But seriously, Max's plants look happy so congratulations that is no small feat :thumb:

I know the feeling... I read far more than I write on here. So many great journals that they get a bit mixed up at times :-)
