In the race for state licenses in Maryland's new medical marijuana market, Green Thumb Industries, LLC (GTI-Maryland) moved one step closer this week after winning site plan approval from Washington County.

"It will be an opportunity to very professionally bring a drug that's desperately needed to our fellow citizens in Maryland and do it in a very responsible and profitable manner," said Sterling Crockett, Sr. with Green Thumb Industries, LLC.

On Monday, the Washington County Planning Commission reviewed and unanimously approved GTI-Maryland's site plan which will be located at the Hopewell Valley Industrial Park. This company is just one of three medical marijuana companies trying to set up shop in the area. Harvest Inc. wants to build a facility in Hancock and Peake Releaf, LLC in Hagerstown.

"We think we have gained a clear advantage by getting our site approved," said Crockett.

Even though, the planning commission unanimously approved the site plan, Chairman Terry Reiber said it wasn't without lots of discussion about the site's security and proximity to commercial areas. But Reiber said his biggest concern is with the current federal statue that considers marijuana as an illegal drug.

"The enforcement agencies of the federal government are turning a blind eye on the current law and they're ignoring the enforcement at this point at least that's what we're told," said Reiber. "We took an oath, as elected and appointed officials; we took an oath to support the laws of the land - all the laws. And unfortunately the federal statute has not been changed."

Currently, GTI-Maryland has two cultivation centers in Illinois. Crockett said they will use one of those existing facilities as the prototype for the center in Hagerstown.

"I think residents can take comfort that we have some experience in building what I believe is a one of a kind type of facility for this purpose," said Crockett.

GTI-Maryland intends on applying for a dispensary license as well but Crockett said that faculty would not be located in Washington County.

If they receive one of the 15 state license, GTI-Maryland said they'll be ready to start construction within weeks. Crockett said they would add 30 to 50 new jobs within the first year and if they continue expanding, they could add as many as 200 jobs in the future.
