The Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission will announce the companies Friday that won preliminary licenses to dispense medical cannabis.
The law legalizing medical marijuana allows up to two dispensaries for each of the state's 47 legislative districts, plus one for each of the 15 marijuana growers.
Commission members selected the winning applicants in late November based on applications that shielded the identities of the applicants.
The applications had been sent to Towson University's Regional Economic Studies Institute, where they were ranked without regard to the identity of the applicant. Towson's rankings were forwarded to the commission for their vote.
Final licenses will be issued after the commission conducts a more detailed review of each company's plans, a process that could take several months.
The commission received more than 800 applications to open dispensaries.
It's not clear when the dispensaries would open. None of the state's growing and processing companies have begun operations.
Three companies who were passed over for growing licenses have filed lawsuits, and black lawmakers in the General Assembly have criticized the commission for not taking racial diversity into account when selecting the licensees.
Some lawmakers criticized the commission for moving forward with dispensary licenses while issues with the grower and processor licenses remain unresolved.
