Federalsburg officials have voted to write a letter supporting an entrepreneur's application for a state license to grow medical marijuana in one of the town's industrial parks.
The Eastern Shore town's mayor and council voted 14-1 last week in favor of Daniel Hurlihy's application for one of 15 cultivating licenses that Maryland will award later this month.
Hurlihy says the business would bring about 40 jobs to the town.
Hurlihy, who already owns one business selling pharmaceutical supplies to hospitals, says he was inspired to try to enter the business of growing medical marijuana after the two brothers he lost to cancer could not use it for treatment.
The lone dissenter in the vote was councilman Ed Windsor. He said he would like to get public feedback first.
