Mars-Hydro LED Grow Light Discussion

And here's 18 plants in a 8x4 with 3 X 1200w Marshydro II , 7 days of flowering
We will most likely add in another 1200w next week when our new Mars pro arrives , I will take the two out of the 4x4 and use the new light , freeing up lights to use elsewhere. Pretty sure I can make 4 X 1200w work in my 4x8 , for some heavy buds . Will add trellis next weekend.

That is OK we all get carried away at least once a day, for every post I make I erase three and regret at least half the others.

By the way that is a nice grow area you have made there.

Oh one can erase ones written mental brakedowns maybe i should use that tactic once in a while when i go mental in my posts. ;)

Tnx for the compliment on the room it is what it is not that big but for personal use pretty efficient. and i can supply seedlings for most my friends included.

its a tree step production line :) if you care for taking the tour

DIY DWC Motherplant and seedling area in the bottom room left. 12w
Veg room left bottom DIY aqua farm with dripper running on airpressure and 50w led
Bloom room 2x 240w (total wall draw about 200w) MH upgraded refletor series.

total usage of power 296w with fans temp controller and irrigation systems running. im pretty saticfied with that on only 2x3 feet of space. then my and the dog have the 19,3m2 left in this realy small "apartment" to chill in :)

bloom 40 and 44 days in

I actually started making it after a brake for some years do too some deep mental issues. when i got better with my sickness, more and more of my friends started growing and kept comming to me for advice, so thought i would get back on the grow horse and in the same run try out the LED lights that i was so critical towards back when i grew with the hps. so now i got my own meds growing again and got an onsite show and tell closet when people need advice about root trimming training topping making seedlings etc. saves me tons of time not running around in peoples rooms all over the county :)

Have a nice day

:Namaste:

Can I ask what people make of the original marshydro 600w panels? They seem very cheap for an actual 275w draw. I could get 3/4 for the price of a single 1600w mars2

I believe Sara said one time , that they make those panels to compete with the cheaper ones on eBay , I use a few of them in my veg and clone tents and they work great . Also like to have one on hand as a back up for parts , all the parts from the cheap ones can be used on the Mars II , LEDs , driver , fan ... Cheaper in the end to buy some of those , than pay for parts after warranty.

But anyway , imho they still work great :)

I'm using the 300w panels .

The "old model" panels, while I wouldn't call them "military quality" are solid lights nevertheless, especially for the price.
I have two semi-outdoors on a porch in a greenhouse under harsh conditions (VERY hot, 95F-110F in Summer easily)..for four months now... and the lights still work like on the first day. The only "issue" is a slight "whirring" from the fans (which I could easily replace) and that under extreme heat some oil (probably thermal paste) is sweating out, covering the drivers and glass in some oily film. I opened them up once and wiped the lights/drivers w/ alcohol, no problem)

I don't have the requirement for uber-wattage like 1200W or 1600W (in fact I use two "300W" lights only) but then we flower outside on the Sunroof and use the greenhouse and lights only for vegging (and my Chilies). But I am confident the two lights would be sufficient for flowering also. I can't complain really.

Here is my weekly update on the ThunderHaze auto's! you can checkout the full grow with details in my current journal :thanks:

I am using the mars 144x5 on my auto's so i can see how the light does on 18/6 and so far with just the veg lights on they are doing great, no diodes out and heat in a non issue. lights are 24 inches away from the pots so about 20 from the canopy and plants really seem to love it right now.

I keep my Mars 300w between 12 ans 18 inches. I get rapid growth at those distances , at 2 ft the growth is in slow motion although stretch will occur.
(in my opinion or so I notice)

Growing with LED's at 2 feet is frighting to me .. it cuts the light power down to about 1/4 strength compared to 12"

i def noticed slow growth under the 18x3 but seems to have stepped up since moving under the 5 watt diodes but i really do think the plants are a bit small and underdevaloped for 25 days in lol thay may just be my inpatince as i always feel this way when i am running out of meds... i have a few purple haze auto seeds ill see if next time around i keep them 12-18 inches see if they grow faster. thanx for the info

Part of growing under LEDs is heat ,
You need the temps to be around 82-84f , for photosynthesis to take place . There are some very interesting articles on this subject and led marijuana growing . Under hps the unused light becomes heat , making leaf temps high , that's why the sweet spot for hps is 78f , leaf temp is actually higher than ambient temp and for photosynthesis to take place optimally the room needs to be at 78f .

Now LEDs produce almost all of the light in a usable spectrum and the leaf doesn't heat up , like under hps , so if your room/tent is around 78f , the leaf temp is really around 70f or so . In order for optimum photosynthesis to occur the room/tent needs to be around 82-84f for the leaf temp to rise to the high 70's . When your grow area has a higher temp optimum photosynthesis is occurring and you will see better growth and much bigger flowers/yield .

A Google search for " leaf surface temp marijuana " , will lead to some good articles .

Interesting stuff flyboy420 , I can climate control my 2x4 x6 cabinet to any temp simple by adjusting fan speed.

In the morning I slow the intake/exhaust down to allow the space to heat up to the 80's then I increase the fans to stabilize.

I am going to look for info on leaf temp and try the procedure out. With my easy climate control I will be able to tune the inside temp to to 90* if needed to get the 84* leaf temp.

currently my plants are growing fast with leaf temps between 70 and 73*

I notice my leaf temps to be around 72* when the room is in the mid 80's

My theory is the leaves are absorbing the heat and transferring the heat to the roots.. or more probable the cooling is caused by the natural air conditioning of the evaporation of the water from the leaf.

Awsome Piks and grows everyone, I'll throw a few up of my Mars hydro grow. Iv gone with 6x dp auto think different in my 4x4ft tent. Bit of a squeeze lol
Vegged and flowered with a single Mars2 1200 watt light. Iv got a 900 also that will be added to next run as temps are cooler now summer is passing here, last Piks are of first plant harvested, other 5 in a week

Also 420flyboy. ....... what kind of temps are u having with the 2 1200s in that 4x4?
And what type of cooling to go with it?

Wen outside temps are 80 then temps in my grow room are 89-92 when I have my 12 + 9 running that's with a 5" ruck in line pulling air out and all vents open. Hence me ditching the 900 for 1200 alone.

I be okay now ill be lucky to hit 60s out ide now for 6 month lol

Looking good calidreaming.

I looked into air temp/leaf temp here is one tidbit , ambient air temperatures under LED lighting should be raised 9 °F compared to HPS to achieve the same leaf temperature.

also a LED company stated this:

While placed under the HPS light, the leaves started showing signs of burning as ambient air temperature approached 80 °F, and the plant was removed from the test as we didn't wish permanent damage to our specimen plant. Without evaporative cooling enabled by open stomata, it appears that 84 °F is too high an ambient temperature to grow this plant under HPS lighting.

I have a 6 inch hyper fan on my 4x4 and 4x8 , the small tent runs turned about half way up and the big tent runs turned all the way down . With the big tent running so low speed , I'm sure I can get another 1200w in there and still keep temps 82-84f .

Black dog did some research on this subject and has tests to prove it , by keeping your temps in the 82-84 range (under LEDs) the leaf temp rises to optimal temps . I bought a laser temp gun and it works well for this test , I can show a video if anyone would like , ambient room temp at 84 and leaf will be at mid 70 or so , and yes it's an evaporating effect and the way the stomas open up , pretty interesting read and good stuff for all us led growers to know . I can see why LEDs fail for so many people, you cannot grow like hps and just hang up an led as a replacement, I see needing the same or close to it in true wattage and tuning your grow to match the new lights .

Just a 2 cents also :)
Those plants you see that I have at 7 weeks where defoliated a few weeks into flowering to promote bud growth , another "trick" for led grows and better growth
Google marijuana defoliating.

It's interesting that different plants like temps at different points for optimal growth , some plants can't even take the heat produced by hps .

I decided to go all LEDs , when we started a hybrid grow with 2 1000w hps and one 1200w Mars II in the middle and the plants started growing more towards the LEDs than the hps and they looked healthier, now under all LEDs from mom to clone to flower , the plants appear to have less stress then using hps and the 18 I put into flowering last weekend have had minimal stretch and are showing signs of flowering nicely . Less heat , healthier plants , higher resin production = better quality and for us that's what's it's about , not quantity, but quality:)

Does anybody know the PPFD for the

Mars II 1600 covering the recommended 4.2' x 4.2' ?

and

MarsPro Cree256 covering the recommended 4' x 4' ?

And can anyone point me to any par readings on the whole 4x4 footprints ?
