ACOLOD CITY - An estimated one-hectare marijuana plantation was raided on Friday by policemen in Salvador Benedicto, Negros Occidental.

Senior Police Officer 4 Felipe Famucol, police chief of Salvador Benedicto, Sunday said the discovery was made after an informant tipped them off about the presence of fully grown marijuana plants as high as five feet in rebel-infested barangay Bunga, Salvador Benedicto, about 47 km northwest of this city.

Famucol said the police were able to recover and uproot more than 100 fully grown marijuana plants, which had been planted and merged with pako (ferns) to avoid detection.

However, Jerry Francisco, the alleged caretaker of the marijuana plantation, was able to elude arrest.

Supt. Mark Edison Belarma, officer-in-charge of the Negros Occidental police, said the marijuana may have been planted early this year.

The mountainous areas of Salvador Benedicto, San Carlos City, Calatrava and Toboso were reported by the police as an ideal place to plant marijuana because of their cool weather.

A four-hectare marijuana plantation was also discovered by the police in San Carlos City, which is adjacent to Salvador Benedicto town, in 1998.

Belarma commended the Salvador Benedicto Police Station for the discovery of the marijuana plantation.

Charges of violation of Republic Act 9165, known as the Comprehensive Illegal Drugs Act of 2002, are now being readied by the police against Francisco.

Senior Supt. Lazaro Torcita, Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency regional director for Western Visayas, said drug pushers in the region have shifted from selling shabu to marijuana, because of scarcity of the former's supply.

In a recent antidrug operations, Torcita said they confiscated several kilos of dried marijuana leaves in Iloilo and 26 marijuana plants in Pontevedra, Negros Occidental.

Late last year, four kilos of dried marijuana leaves were also seized by the police from a drug courier at the wharf of San Carlos City.
