Back in November of 2016, a German group by the name of the Research Initiative on Cannabis Consumption began the process of opening a study on the effects that regular marijuana use has on the adult body, but doing so has come with some challenges seeing that the drug is not quite legal in Germany. It wasn't until just this last March that the German government slightly lifted the restriction to allow a limited use for medicinal purposes. With that hurdle out of the way now, researches believe it opens the door for their own study and they want government approval for up to 25,000 pot smokers.
While using the already approved medicinal users might seem like a quicker approach, their serious illnesses that allowed for such use would present too many variables to the study. Instead, they want access to pot-smokers who are seemingly healthy and know what they're doing.
"In Germany, several million people regularly get high on cannabis. It's time that science becomes more engaged with recreational user," managing director of the study, Marko Dörre, wrote up on the group's latest submission to Germany's Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM).
Should the study be approved, participants won't be given a free pass to buy and smoke an unlimited supply of marijuana. Instead they would need to follow the same rules set in place for medicinal smokers, which limits the monthly purchase to only 30 grams.
