For the first 11 months of 2016, Colorado has collected almost $109 million in taxes and fees from marijuana. Our kind legislators won't even pass a law to legalize medical marijuana, so individuals suffering chronic pain from cancer, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy or other medical conditions have to move out of state if they want relief.
Wyoming's education fund is going bankrupt, so our wise legislators are introducing a bill to increase the state sales tax another 2 percent! Instead of thinking inside of the old-fashioned, square box, why not have new ideas to get money for Wyoming coffers? Even with a new president in the White House, coal is no longer going to be Wyoming's savior.
Maybe not a popular idea, but raise the price of a six-pack of beer by 50 cents. Double the fee for each cow that is grazed on public land — after all it is the public's land. And legalize marijuana.
I heard Chief Kozak on a local radio program saying that marijuana-related arrests have not gone up since Colorado legalized it. Yet, in the blotter briefs, I sure see lots of arrests related to alcohol!
Marijuana doesn't cause diabetes, liver disease, alcoholism or violence. I read marijuana is a gateway drug, so I assume beer is also a gateway drug; is it time to outlaw beer?
Wyoming wants younger people to either stay in, or come to, Wyoming. Young people are tired of the restrictive rules in Wyoming; that is why they leave. Wyoming fought the Indian tribes on casinos; we were probably the last state in the union to even have a lottery. People certainly don't move to Cheyenne for a bike lane, the Greenway or to enjoy the wind.
At a minimum, legislators should pass a constitutional amendment that would put marijuana legalization on the ballot. At least let Wyoming voters have a say in the matter.
